United Church in University Place offers short-term and emergency counseling to those in need. In addition, our pastor and many members of the congregation visit members and friends who may be hospitalized, home-bound or in care homes. Our Congregational Care Cluster assists in helping with emergency transportation, meals and other forms of support.
United Church in University Place has a long history of serving those in need. This service extends beyond the walls of the church and encompasses our neighbors in the greater Tacoma community and individuals across the globe.
Current service activities:
Family Housing Network
UCUP serves as a host site for the Family Housing Network., providing beds, food and friendship to families in transition. Each December, members of the congregation 'adopt' a Family Housing family and supply them with holiday gifts.
Food Bank Donation Collection
We support two area food banks, My Sister’s Pantry and Families Unlimited Network, through the ongoing collection of food and clothing. UCUP also regularly sends a team of volunteers to work at My Sister’s Pantry.
One Great Hour of Sharing
Every year we participate in One Great Hour of Sharing by sharing our financial gifts to support the church’s wider mission.
Associated Ministries Pierce County Hunger Walk
Each October a team of UCUP walkers and supporters participate in the Pierce County Hunger Walk to raise funds and awareness for this important issue.
This annual event highlights mission work in one region of the world and raises funds to support that mission. In spring 2011 we raised funds for Hands for Peacemaking and learned about their work in Guatemala.
Youth Mission Trip
Every year or every other year our Youth Group raises money to spend a week with the Sierra Service Project to help low-income residents of various Native American reservations throughout the country by performing major house repairs. In the summer of 2011 they helped on the Yurok Indians Reservation in Wautek, California, the summer of 2012 they helped the Susanville Indian Rancheria in California, in 2013 they helped the Klamath Tribe in Chiloquin, Oregon and the summer of 2014 they helped the Walker River Paiute Tribe in Nevada.
Alternative Gift Fair
During the Advent season, members of the church hold an Alternative Gift Fair. This annual event encourages members to purchase gifts that support organizations including Agros, Heifer International and Church World Service.
Our Greening Movement
The UCUP Greening Movement defines "Greening our Ministry" as:
Ours is the God of all creation. We are a part of that creation with the awareness, ability and responsibility to be mindful of our intricate role in that creation. As we "green our ministry" this awareness increasingly becomes part of the very warp and weave of our faith. It is about the care of the earth and a ministry to all of God's creation. United Church in University Place is a member of Earth Ministry.
As stewards of God's good earth we, the people of the United Church in University Place are emboldened by our Christian faith to understand, protect, preserve and conserve God's creation.
